Security Assessment

There are two realms of security threats in the correctional setting: overt and covert.

Escape, riot, assault, confinement and other threats to physical safety are examples of overt security concerns. Covert threats include smuggling/trafficking, fraternization, illicit access to sensitive information and personal manipulation.

The provision of healthcare (to include medical, dental and psychological services) within the correctional setting can set the stage for numerous security problems. Some of these relate to the presence of items of potential value to the offender population, such as sharp objects, syringes and pharmaceuticals.

Other security concerns relate to the one-on-one nature of the relationship between provider and patient. The facility design itself, as it relates to line-of-sight supervision, offender movement and access, can pose problems as well.

Beyond offender-related security issues, there can be problems with staff relating to conversion, theft of pharmaceuticals and other sensitive matters.

Having dealt with such concerns in a variety of facility settings since 1986, I can help you identify and negate the wide range of potential security problems inherent in the provision of healthcare services.
